From Studio to Site with Lindsay Mapes

From Studio to Site is a series that takes a closer look at artworks chosen for client projects - beginning in the artist’s studio for an intimate look at their creative process, before exploring how the pieces come to life in their final setting.

For this feature, we visited Lindsay Mapes, an American artist now based in East London. Lindsay studied painting at the San Francisco Art Institute, Studio Arts Centre International in Florence, and earned her MFA from the Slade School of Fine Art.

Working across painting, textiles, and sculpture, Lindsay’s practice is a joyful celebration of the act of making. Her work embraces playfulness, honesty, and process, aiming to evoke a sense of happiness and curiosity in the viewer. With an intuitive and experimental approach, she often challenges traditional boundaries of form and surface, creating vibrant and expressive explorations of material and mark.

Lindsay gave us a tour of her studio and spoke about the pieces selected for Momento Hayes, as well as her wider artistic journey and influences. She shared how motherhood has shaped her practice, further deepening her engagement with themes of play and spontaneity.

Two of the works featured in Momento Hayes come from her In Stitches series - an ongoing body of work inspired by tapestry walls and the history of domestic craft. Using textile materials much like she uses paint, Lindsay blurs the boundaries between fine art and craft, exploring how tapestry and painting can coexist and inform one another.

For Momento Hayes, her work introduces a sense of fun and warmth to the social spaces within the building. Her distinctive blend of painting and tapestry adds both texture and depth to the art collection, echoing the interiors’ celebration of materiality while bringing a sense of playfulness and connection to the residents who live there.
