Rebecca Hardaker: 'It's not what you see, it's what you see in it'

30 May - 30 June 2024

Rebecca Hardaker (b.1988, Yorkshire) is a contemporary artist based in north London. Hardaker's vibrant and engaging artworks explore the intersection of painting and drawing. Painting directly with her hands, her abstract expressionist works have great depth and complexity. The large scale pieces in this exhibition are pure expressions of emotion displaying a physicality and a flow of uncensored mark making. While some pieces in the show are inspired by nature such as the poppy valleys in California, others incorporate excerpts from inspiring texts taken from poetry and literature.

The title for the show, “It’s not what you see, it’s what you see in it”, comes from a quote from the landscape designer Piet Oudolf. Resonating with Rebecca’s work, she encourages viewers find within each painting something that uniquely speaks to them.
