Mark Charlton is a contemporary British artist based on the south coast of the UK, whose work draws inspiration from nature, science, the passage of time, and the notion that everything in the universe is interconnected. Through abstraction and minimalism, Charlton creates a narrative from spontaneous compositions, using an organic and evolving process of discovery.
The exhibition Walking Through delves into themes of history, memory, and emotion, reflecting the experiences of life and ageing as we balance fluctuating moments. Reminiscent of unearthed fragments left cold and silent, this new body of work exudes a sensual physicality and presence, with pieces created through intuitive, sometimes erratic mark-making. Painting, printing, drawing, and collage techniques are all visible, contributing to the sense of an active, exploratory process.
Yet at the core of each piece is a search for stillness—a moment of pause for contemplation and reflection. Charlton’s endless love for the exploration of materials means the final presentation of his work is always evolving, but beneath the surface lies a consistent process of layering and weathering. Over time, this journey uncovers an unexpected beauty in the decay of the surface, before a final harmony and balance is realised.
Mark Charlton left a career in the animation and design industry to pursue his career in Fine Art. His work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions, group shows and art fairs cross the UK and Europe.
